The leader of the largest and most
left-wing labour union CGIL, Maurizio Landini, on Sunday called
for fresh talks with the cabinet after he said 500,000 people
demonstrated across Italy on Friday as part of a general strike
proclaimed by CGIL and UIL against the government's 2025 budget
bill.
"The point is what does the government say now" to the 500,000
people who demonstrated on Friday, Landini noted on the
sidelines of the assembly of the Green and Left Alliance (AVS)
in Chianciano, Tuscany.
"There must be an answer.
"As far as we are concerned, it is necessary to increase
healthcare spending and act on taxation to take the resources
necessary for these investments", said Landini.
"We are asking the cabinet in an explicit way to summon again a
meeting on the budget law, and we are asking entrepreneurs to
open negotiations on the renewal of contracts", said Landini.
CGIL called the strike on Friday together with the third-biggest
and former Socialist union, UIL.
The third of the Big Three confederations, former Christian
Democrat CSIL, did not participate.
Over 70% of workers in the public and private sectors
participated in the strike, according to CGIL and UIL.
The mobilization was called to increase salaries and pensions,
finance healthcare, education and public services and
investments in industrial policies.
